≪용담댐 시리즈-수몰 이전_The Series of Yongdam Dam-Before Submergence≫은 1990년에 착공되어 2001년 10월 완공된 용담댐 건설
과정에서 삶의 터전이 물에 잠기고 고향을 잃어야만 했던 수몰민들의 견디기 힘든 삶의 유린 현상에 주목한 다큐멘터리 사진이다.

이는 국토 개발을 기치로 전통문화를 파괴하고 전통적 가치관을 말살하며 우리의 정체성을 위협해 온 산업화 근대화의 시대적 현상을 상징화한
<프롤로그>, 참담한 폐허 속에서 마지막 고향 땅을 지키고 있던 ‘용담’ 마을 50여 가구 수몰민들을 촬영한 <수몰민>, 강제 이주 정책으로 살림살
이를 모두 비우고 떠난 텅 빈 방을 촬영한 <폐가>, 마을 전체가 폐허로 변한 종말론적 상황을 포착한 <마을>, 고향땅을 물속에 묻고 타향으로 발
길을 돌려야만 했던 수몰민들의 상실의 심정을 상징화한 <에필로그>로 구성되었다.

이로써 ‘용담’ 마을을 근대화로 인한 실향의 제유적 공간으로 해석한 ≪용담댐 시리즈-수몰 이전≫은 새만금 간척사업이나 후에 백지화로 귀결된
동강 영월댐건설사업 등 1990년대 우리나라 개발의 현실을 압축적으로 보여주고자 하였다. 특히 전 지구적으로 진행되고 있는 과학기술, 산업
문명의 패권적 지배 상황과 서구적 자본주의적 일직선적인 진보주의를 시사하고 있다.

≪The Series of Yongdam Dam-Before Submergence≫ This is a documentary photo that focuses on the unbearable violation
of the lives of submerged people who had to lose their hometowns and their livelihoods were submerged in water during the
construction of Yongdam Dam, which began in 1990 and was completed in October 2001.

This is <Prologue>, which symbolizes the phenomenon of industrialization and modernization that has destroyed traditional
culture, obliterated traditional values, and threatened our identity under the banner of national development, and depicts the
village of Yongdam, which was protecting its last hometown amidst miserable ruins. <Submerged People>, which filmed the
submerged people of several households; <Abandoned House>, which filmed empty rooms left empty of all their household
goods due to the forced relocation policy; <Village>, which captured the apocalyptic situation in which the entire village was
turned into ruins; It consists of <Epilogue>, which symbolizes the feelings of loss of the submerged people who had to ask and
return to their hometown.

In this way, the ≪Yongdam Dam Series - Before Submergence≫, which interprets the 'Yongdam' village as a synecdoche space
of displacement due to modernization, condensates the reality of Korea's development in the 1990s, such as the Saemangeum
reclamation project and the Donggang Yeongwol Dam construction project, which later ended in cancellation. I wanted to give
it. In particular, it suggests the hegemonic domination of science and technology and industrial civilization that is taking place
globally and the linear progressivism of Western capitalism.
